I am liking this a lot. true to the original
I was really hoping M.U.L.E. Returns was going to recreate M.U.L.E. in all its 8-bit glory – the same graphics and playstyle of the original.
Playstyle – definitely. Graphics – potentially. We’re contemplating downloadabls “skins” for the game and the 8bit would be the first skin we’d create.
Gotta have the original music/sound (especially c64 version) as an option. Even the glitches. 🙂
Ooh! I like the idea of skins, especially if that means playing THE M.U.L.E. once again on new hardware!
Gotta have the original music/sound (especially the original Atari version) as an option!
Love these screenshots, really well done. Glad to see the map layout will be the same. Like the idea of being able to choose a retro skin, but I will probably more often prefer to play using the updated designs. I can’t wait to play M.U.L.E. on my ipad!!!!
I like to see “Original” graphics, like the ones in the Atari 400/600 or Commodore 64 versions. Theres no need to “update” the graphics, cause the original ones are minimalistic and understandable.
Anyway, a lot of newbies don’t understand that, so go with the ones you created, but please give us 8bit-generation the original ones!
Yes Klaus. 8 bit skins will be available.
Wow, that are gooooOOOOOoood news! Thanks for that!
Maybe you could get the jazzed up music from Planet MULE? The graphics look too cartoony to me…
Thanks for the feedback. We are remixing the music and will likely have a few variations to offer.
As for the graphics – keep in mind these have to look good on a small phone screen as well. We’ll see how it looks all put together.
I’m so excited to see this is coming to iPad. I love the new look. I suppose it will be fun to have a retro skin but the new graphics transfer well. Hopefully the town part and the gambling etc will look just as good. I do think we need the original score as an option. I can still here it in my head. I got my first Atari 800 the day it was available in Australia and M.U.L.E. and Miner 2049er remain two of my favorites from that era. Don’t forget the classic intro of the spaceship arriving at Planet Irata!
Thanks Stuart. We’re thinking of having a number of version of the theme song to choose from – there are some interesting remixes to be made.
And yes of course we’ll have the spaceship landing.
The appearance of the map actually looks like an improvement over the original with the lines delineating plots! Hopefully you’ve managed to emulate (or improve?) the underlying economics of the game. The old game had some odd outcomes at times; an over abundance of smithore and yet Mule prices were through the roof (supply & demand!?).
Matt – that’s clearly going to be the most challenging part. Keeping the feel of the game consistent (without bugs).
I hope the computer A.I. is smarter than it used to be. That was my only complaint with the original.
I bought MULE the day my daughter was born, 10/29/83. We played on the Atari 800 which I still have and I also have my original game with complete packaging. This is the greatest game I ever played. You needed brains to play and win. Especially against 3 other players.
The animations look pretty good. One thing, I miss how the bonzoid would shake its upper body left-right as it walked. At least, I think it was the bonzoid who did that.
Hmm…tell me more…I can’t picture it.
When Walking up/down on screen, his upper body and head shakes left and right as he walks on his hands.
I think that graphics look too cartoony for me too. Maybe it take some time get used to. Those 8bit skins are great idea. Then we can play game as C64, Atari, Nes and pc version. Atleast gfx look same even game was different. Just hope game to be as close to C64 version as possible. Or Atleast option for that.
The graphics and animation look fantastic IMHO! I’ve been waiting a long time for an updated, official version of MULE.
Honestly, if I wanted to play the original version I would (and have) run an emulator with the original code.
HEY!
What about the Wampus??
The Wampus is coming….
EEK! lol.
Please make playing with the original graphics at least an OPTION! And please make a version for the PC straight-up. (Put it on X-Box Live and I’d pay a lot!)
Looks good. Have you considered larger maps with a optionally longer play times? Ie 24 months on a larger grid?
Taking a look at the main external terrain map. It’s nicely done but some concerns with the player colours. You can see the difference between the red land pieces vs. the greens, but the yellow and orange colours are not distinctive enough from the landscape. You need a colour that clearly jumps out when you do a quick scan of the map on who owns what. Overall, great stuff! 🙂
Graphics style: Slightly too cartoony for me as well, I’d like the races to be more faithful to the original. Like the Gollumer that got a blob as a head as compared to the original, more ET-like one.
Player colors: Please try to get as much contrast as possible between the colors, I remember it being a serious pain to discern between the dark blue and dark purple fields on a blurry TV 😉
I’m excited to see the finished product. Finally, mule returns! The screenshots look like a nicely modernized version of my favorite game. Can’t wait to try it!
While I personally like the style you’ve chosen, I think it looks good for the iOS market, I would put in a vote for some more detail on the player characters, as they’re pretty plain.
The Packer needs to be ludicrously happy. This one looks too worried and doesnt do the original justice.
Hurry! I have been waiting for someone to do this since my C64 died of old age (and MULE along with it) in 1995.
Any place to sign up for beta test (iOS)?
The screenshot of the planet overview, it is nice looking but unplayable for people with moderate colorblindness. The plots need to be easier to distinguish of the player color.
(as in sharper highly contrasting colors and perhaps thicker borders if it is possible)
Please please bring m.u.l.e. to the iPad. I did see a Mac version and it was kinda cool, but the iPad version in 8 bit would rock!!
I think that there is a demand for it $.99 would be worth it if any one would like we could kick start it with some funds….
The music would rally have to be the same I like the idea of skins and possibly updated music – but only as options……
Please feel free to contact me if you would like help developing this…..
Robotech……
